Responsible Computing Challenge Project

Project Purpose

Infusion of real-life societal effect of technology into two courses, introduction to computers and data structures and algorithms, in collaborative teaching between the department of computing and the department of philosophy.

Project Responsibilities

Outputs:

Integrating ethics into lectures, case studies, and class discussions intertwined with the technical topics in “CSC 111 Introduction to Computer Systems” and “CSC 211 Data Structures and Algorithms”
Formation of an interdisciplinary collaboration with UoN’s department of Philosophy and UoN’s C4DLab Innovation Hub who will give access to startups d their industry mentors who will enrich the case studies and discussions planned for this project.

Outcomes:

Students will be able to apply “conceptual” knowledge to actual business scenarios.
Students will be able to learn how experienced industry practitioners analyse and solve ethical problems in real world scenarios rather than “theoretical” cases.
Enhance the student’s critical thinking and promote active learning through aspects such as class discussions, group presentations and seminars.
To elevate the impact of their intervention, they intend to conduct surveys among the first year students when they are just a few weeks into the semester and at the end of the semester to measure and assess motivation and interest of students around computing ethics.
